Weight
Volume
Aluminum has a lower specific gravity than cast iron, and on the premise of meeting strength requirements, aluminum cylinder bodies are much lighter. The light engine can have a positive impact on the weight distribution of the entire vehicle, and the overall weight of the vehicle is also lighter. So, aluminum cylinder blocks have an advantage in this regard.
For the same reason, aluminum has a lower specific gravity, and the structural strength of aluminum per unit volume is lower than that of cast iron, so aluminum cylinder bodies are usually larger in volume. The center distance of the cylinder body of EA113/EA888 is 88mm, while the existing version has a cylinder diameter of up to 82.5mm, except for the cooling water channel, the cylinder wall is actually quite thin.
Resistance
Aluminum has faster thermal conductivity, so it has better cooling performance and can help reduce the probability of abnormal combustion in engines. With the same compression ratio, aluminum cylinder engines can use lower grade gasoline than cast iron cylinder engines. Aluminum cylinder blocks have an advantage in this regard.
